An entry level DSLR or mirrorless camera starts around $500-$600 but it goes up from there! You can do new or refurbished cameras. You need to factor in lenses, memory cards, extra batteries, and a camera bag when budgeting.  You can get "bundles"; where it comes with some accessories, basic lens, & the camera body.

Stores I recommend. Make sure to compare prices!
  • Adorama
  • B&H Photo
  • Amazon
  • Best Buy
I personally shop online but Best Buy is a great way to get your hands on the camera to check it out!

This is the great debate among photogs! Most people ask if you are team Nikon, Canon, Sony?  Can't go wrong with any of them but you can always read up on it. This article does a great job of breaking it down for you.  It really comes down to a matter of opinion and your budget.

If you choose to purchase a "bundle" package, you'll receive a standard "kit" lens with your camera.  It will zoom and take care of your basic needs.  Looking to add a lens to your bag and wanting to work on your portrait photos? I suggest a 50 mm 1.8 lens.  It's nickname is the FIFTY NIFTY! Its a great investment for the price!

Most important PART when purchasing an entry level DSLR or a mirrorless camera! There are slight differences and prices when comparing between cameras.  What's your purpose for the camera? Travel? Family? Pets?   Amazon, Adorama, B&H all have great and honest reviews.

Ready to take that entry level camera and go to the "Big Girl" camera? This article helps explain the difference in an entry level and a professional grade camera. Keep in mind, when you graduate to the next level, so do your lenses! There are many positives to this next step but it's a big investment.

What is the difference between a DSLR and Mirrorless Camera?
  • To keep it simple a DSLR has a mirror inside that allows light into the camera and when the shutter is pressed, the mirror flips up, exposing the image sensor to light.
  • A mirrorless camera is that it is mirrorless and strips away the mirror mechanism entirely.  The camera has a LCD screen to provide a digital preview of the scene as captured by the sensor.
  • Other differences? Mirrorless cameras tend to be smaller in size, use different lens than DSLR cameras, and prices can vary with both types of cameras.
  • It really comes down to preference on which camera you prefer.
